Torch On Waterproofing

A hard wearing sheet membrane system

Overview

High-Performance Torch-On Waterproofing

Torch-on waterproofing is a premier method that employs polymer-modified bitumen membrane sheets to create an impermeable barrier against water ingress. Reinforced with tough non-woven polyester carrier sheets, it offers extreme resistance to physical tearing, structural shifts, and hydrostatic pressure, making it the industry standard for flat concrete roofs, decks, and balconies.

Our bituminous membranes are specifically selected for the South African climate, featuring Atactic Polypropylene (APP) modification. This increases the material's heat resistance up to 150C, ensuring it does not flow or degrade under the intense Gauteng sun, while maintaining excellent cold flexibility during winter nights.

Applications

Where We Apply Torch-On Systems

A versatile, robust waterproofing solution suited for high-exposure building elements.

🏛

Flat Roof Waterproofing

Flat concrete roofs are highly susceptible to ponding water. Our 4mm APP torch-on membrane creates a seamless, durable blanket that completely seals the concrete structure and diverts rainwater to outlets.

🏜

Balconies & Decks

Balconies experience structural movement and foot traffic. We apply a double-layer torch-on system underneath the screed and tile layers, protecting the structural slab from leaks and moisture cracks.

🏠

Planter Boxes & Basements

Below-ground elements require root-resistant membranes that withstand constant moisture. Torch-on sheet membranes prevent soil water from migrating into retaining walls and basement structures.

Installation Process

Our Rigorous Torching Method

Only experienced, certified applicators should install torch-on membranes, as the safety and success of the system depend on perfect thermal fusion. Our process ensures a leak-free bond:

  • 1. Preparation: Concrete surfaces are cleaned, cracks are sealed, and a high-penetration bituminous primer is applied to ensure maximum adhesion.
  • 2. Alignment: Membrane rolls are laid out and aligned with a minimum 100mm side lap and 150mm end lap to eliminate water pathways.
  • 3. Torching: A propane gas torch is used to heat the under-surface bitumen to its melting point while rolling the sheet forward, fuse-bonding it directly to the primed concrete.
  • 4. Detailing & Testing: Upstands, outlets, and flashing are detailed carefully, followed by a seam-welding inspection and quality sign-off.

Key Advantages

  • • Designed for full, continuous water immersion
  • • Heavy-duty polyester reinforcement resists structural movement
  • • Over 20-year lifespan when professionally maintained
  • • Reflective slate-granule options shield concrete from UV rays
  • • Non-toxic, non-carcinogenic formulation safe for residential use
